Perinatology

When Your Pregnancy is At-Risk
That’s why we’re here.

A maternal-fetal medicine specialist, also called a Perinatologist, is an Obstetrician who has received additional education and can evaluate, diagnose, and monitor high-risk pregnancies.

Watertown Regional Medical Center collaborates with the University of Wisconsin (UW) Health and Meriter Hospital to provide maternal-fetal medicine services to Watertown and the surrounding communities. These physicians are on-site regularly, and their goal is to make a high-risk situation less stressful for you and your baby and help ensure a healthier pregnancy and a safer delivery.

Perinatologist Care

Maternal-fetal medicine specialists take care of pregnant women who:

  • Have chronic conditions including heart or kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes, and thrombophilia
  • Are at risk for pregnancy-related complications, including preterm labor, pre-eclampsia, and twin or triplet pregnancies
  • Have fetuses at risk due to chromosomal or congenital abnormalities, maternal disease, infections, genetic diseases, and/or growth restriction.

High-risk pregnancies may result from:

  • a pre-existing medical condition, such as high blood pressure
  • a new pregnancy-related medical condition, such as gestational diabetes
  • complications in past pregnancies or recurrent losses
  • a new diagnosis of fetal or placental abnormality

High-risk pregnancies often require more frequent appointments and additional testing. Our goal is to help guide you through them, paving the way for a healthy pregnancy and safe delivery in your home community.

Personalized Delivery and Neonatal Care

We collaborate closely with your primary obstetric provider by regularly sharing updates, images, and test results. We encourage co-managed care when possible so you may deliver in your community. When needed, your obstetrician can transfer your care to our team.

Highly skilled doctors
Providing care for a high-risk pregnancy requires a special set of skills, knowledge, and expertise. Our team features doctors who are board-certified in obstetrics and in gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine, with training and experience from leading institutions around the country. You may be experiencing a health-related issue that might affect your pregnancy, or your unborn child may have a medical issue that needs to be addressed prior to birth. In either case, you can be confident in knowing you will receive the very best treatment from doctors who have been specifically trained in managing complex pregnancies.

Team approach
Each patient and pregnancy are unique, so their treatment should be too. We assemble a team dedicated to your care based on your specific needs. This may include specialists from endocrinology for diabetes, psychiatry for substance use, or cardiology for pregnancy-related hypertension. We will coordinate any referrals to ensure you get the care you need.
